Brown Butter Cream Cheese Frosting

Thick, sweet cream cheese frosting with specks of nutty brown butter swirled throughout.

Brown butter is liquid gold that makes everything so much more delicious. It adds a caramel or toffee-like flavor to cream cheese frosting and brings it to the next level.

Ingredients Needed

Unsalted butter, full fat cream cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and salt.

First, melt the butter over medium heat stirring constantly. It will foam first and then sizzle. Eventually white milk solids will separate and sink to the bottom.

Step 1

The butter will turn golden with brown bits at the bottom. It will also smell super nutty. Take off the heat and pour in a bowl.

Step 2

Chill the butter in the refrigerator for about an hour or until it reaches a softened butter consistency.

Step 3

Cream the browned butter and softened cream cheese together on medium high speed until smooth and creamy.

Step 4

Gradually beat in the powdered sugar and then add the vanilla and salt on low. Increase the speed until the frosting is light and fluffy.

Step 5

Use your cream cheese frosting on cakes, cupcakes, and more! Want to make this recipe? Check out the full instructions at:
